Inland Waterways Association Festival

St Ives will be hosting the Inland Waterways Association Festival in 2007, over the August bank holiday weekend. The event is expected to bring more than 25000 visitors to the town, more than 400 boats and hundreds of campers and caravanners.

In addition to boating activities there will be a programme of entertainment and music and local schools are being encouraged to participate.

This is something of a coup for the area, but poses a challenge for boaters from other areas because the only water route to St Ives is via Northampton to Peterborough on the river Nene, then across the Middle Levels through March to join the river Great Ouse downstream of Ely from whence up the Great Ouse to St Ives. Parts of this route have limited navigation dependent on tides and water levels, so apart from being a long journey it also has some navigational complexities.
